Hakup Gochumiyan

Hakup Gochumiyan is a Christian citizen from Armenia. He was arrested along with his wife, Elisa Shahroudian, during his trip to Iran, and in a joint case with a number of Christians, he was sentenced to long-term imprisonment, fines, and social exclusions.

After inspecting Mrs. Shahvardian's grandmother's house, the couple was transferred to Evin prison. According to this report, for several weeks, the couple was kept in the solitary cells of Ward 209 of Evin Prison and subjected to psychological torture and consecutive interrogations, which lasted between two and five hours each time, and they were not able to speak Persian during the interrogations. According to this report, the judicial officials, while merging Mr. Hakopian's case with several other arrests and selecting one charge for all 10 Christian citizens accused in the case, issued their decision. The defendants in this case were sentenced to a total of 42 years in prison, 5 billion rials in fines, deprivation of social rights of the fifth degree, and significant confiscation of their property, and for five of these Christian citizens, additional punishments including a ban on leaving the country, ban on membership in political and social organizations or groups, and the ban on staying in Tehran province and neighboring provinces for two years have also been added. Mr. Gouchoumian's explanation that he brought the books as a gift at the request of his Armenian friends because it is easier for them to read the Bible in Persian than in Armenian was not accepted by the court and judicial officers.
