The defendants wrote a letter to Judge Salavati describing the torture he had endured and requested his attention. He wrote in a section of the letter :
> They blindfolded, handcuffed and tied me to a piece of wood upside-down. Then they beat me with lashes, handcuffs and their hands. They struck my sides with brass knuckles and put a knife to my throat and wrist and threatened to kill me. They threatened to rape me as a group and used these techniques to force me to confess on video and sign confession letters to crimes I did not commit.
