Masoumeh Haji Abolhassan

Masoumeh Haji Abolhassan (Masi Abolhassan) is a journalist, photographer, and gender equality activist from Tehran. She has been a journalist for over two decades and has also worked with ISNA for a period of time. For her participation in the Me Too campaign, she was sued by a person close to the IRGC and received a prison sentence.

Her plaintiff, Babak Molaei, is a former manager at Sadra company and Deep Water Technology. Both of these companies have been sanctioned by the US for their ties with the IRGC. <symbol-timeline></symbol-timeline>

  • <coverage-outsourcing id='40803'> She was summoned to the Iranian Cyber Police (FATA) after a complaint from Babak Molaei. According to IPA sources, Babak Molaei was a former classmate of Ms. Abolhassan at university and has been a manager or contractor in several companies close to the IRGC. A few days after the summons, Ms. Haji Abolhassan visited FATA police and she wasn't allowed to have her attorney with her. According to the evidence, Ms. Abolhaasan had described her experience of sexual harassment during the time of the Me Too movement. In one case she mentioned Babak Molaei, saying: > ... he invited me to his house. and came to my bed while I was asleep.... According to IPA sources, before the summons to FATA police, Babak Molaei had threatened her to delete her note and deny the sexual abuse story. </coverage-outsourcing>
  • <coverage-outsourcing id='40805'> She was summoned to the third branch of the cyber crimes court. According to IPA sources, Ms. Abolhassan left the country shortly after the case was brought against her so there is no news about the trial procedure. </coverage-outsourcing>

Based on the indictment copy that IPA has received, Prosecutor Ali Dehpour Atashbek has charged her with libel and agitating public opinion through disseminating lies. </coverage-outsourcing>
  • <coverage-outsourcing id='40804'> Branch 1032 of the criminal court two of Tehran, in the Qods judicial headquarters, headed by Mohsen Mousavi, sentenced her to fine and prison. According to the document received by Atlas, she has been sentenced to pay a fine of 20 million Tomans for defamation, six months for libel, and nine months for agitating public opinion by disseminating lies. Nine months of imprisonment is applicable under Article 134. Masi Abolhassan was also accused of "encouraging people to commit moral corruption and prostitution" in the previous stages, which was mentioned in the indictment in the list of accusations. Still, the judge did not address it in his evaluation and decision. This vote was in absentia, and the judge issued the decision based on the report of judicial officials. Atlas does not have access to detailed information about the process of dealing with Mrs. Abolassan's case. Still, based on the court evidence, the plaintiff sought to accuse Mrs. Abolhassan of "encouraging people to moral corruption and prostitution."The subpoenas sent to Masi Abolhassan show that this accusation was included in Babak Moulai's initial complaint against her. Still, it is not seen in the initial summons sent from the primary court. In the continuation of the proceedings, the case is returned from the court to the prosecutor's office.
