A bomb was detonated during a drill conducted by the miltary in Mahabad, resulting in the deaths of a number of spectators. The next day Heidar Mossallahi, the Interim Intelligence Minister, announced that the elements behind this bombing had been identified. Three days later, Abdolrasoul Mahmoudabadi, Commander of the Hamzeh Military Base in Urmia, reported that 30 individuals involved in this bombing had been killed and that only a handful of those involved are currently at large and fugitives from the law. The day after, Mohammad Pakpour, Interim Commander of the IRGC's Infantry reported that members of the group responsible for the bombings had been killed. On the same day, Ali Abdollahi, Security Deputy of the Intelligence Ministry, reported that they are following clues to arrest the last remaining members of those responsible for the bombing. Hossein Osmani, Saber Sheikh Abdollah, and Diakou Rasoulzadeh were arrested for their involvement in this case three years later.

Bultan News, a website with ties to the Islamic Government's security forces, published a report which claimed that two of the individual's involved with the bombing had managed to escape and that three other individuals by the names of Diakou Rasoulzadeh, Hossein Osmani, and Saber Sheikh Abdollah were arrested by agents of the Intelligence Ministry. The report claimed that a Komala safe-house had been identified and that the defendants were arrested there. These individuals were actually arrested on separate dates and in separate locations.

The PressTV network broadcasted the confessions of Diakou Rasoulzadeh and Saber Sheikh Abdollah, two of the defendants in the bombing case. These individuals spoke about their role in the bombings during the interview. PressTV claimed that these individuals had traveled to Iraq twice. According to these individuals' family members, they did not own passports prior to the bombing and had never exited the country illegally.

The defendant refused to accept the charges against him and asked his brother to hire him an attorney.

According the Kurdistan Human Rights Network, branch 47 of the Supreme Court of Iran repealed the sentence of execution for the three individuals charged in this case. According to this report, the Supreme Court sent Hossein Osmani’s case to first branch of the Revolutionary Court of Mahabad, and Saber Sheikh Abdollah’s and Diako Rasoulzadeh’s case to 1st branch of the Revolutionary Court of Urmia.
