پس از افزایش ناگهانی نرخ بنزین، میلیون‌ها معترض در ده‌ها شهر ایران دست به تظاهرات زدند. هر چند در ساعات اولیه سمت و سوی اعتراضات افزایش نرخ بنزین را هدف قرار گرفته بود، اما کمی بعد اعتراضات به سمت مخالفت با حکومت پیش رفت. از لحظات اولیه حضور مردم در خیابان‌ها، در بسیاری نقاط شلیک به سوی معترضین آغاز شد و نیروهای امنیتی صدها تن را کشتند یا زخمی کردند. بسیاری اعتراضات سراسری آبان ۹۸ را عظیم‌ترین خیزش علیه حکومت تا آن زمان و واکنش جمهوری اسلامی را وسیع‌ترین سرکوب معترضین غیرحزبی می‌دانند <symbol-timeline></symbol-timeline>
